(COLUMBUS, OHIO, 11/17/22)– CAIR-Ohio celebrates the historic win of over 80 Muslims who were elected to office this past week across the U.S., including two new members of the Ohio Legislature.

Munira Abdullahi, a local youth director and Ohio State Representative-Elect for District 9, and Ismail Mohamed, a local attorney and Ohio State Rep. Elect for District 3 are the first Somali Muslims elected to the Ohio Legislature. Columbus is home to the second-largest Somali population after Minneapolis.

“We are elated that Muslims are taking the initiative to represent their communities by running for office and successfully being elected. Congratulations to Munira and Ismail for their monumental wins and being part of creating a government by and for the people. This is also a win and inspiration for all historically underrepresented communities to see more diversity in their representatives,” said Executive Director Amina Barhumi.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. CAIR-Ohio has three offices in Ohio – Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland.

Their mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims
