(COLUMBUS, OH – 1/26/23) – The Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) today condemned the proposed amendment put forth by some Ohio House Representatives that would make it mandatory for all House sessions to begin with a “Christian Prayer.”

In a statement, CAIR-Ohio Executive Director Amina Barhumi said:
“This proposed amendment is a blatant violation of the principles of religious freedom and diversity that are at the core of our nation’s values.
“It not only violates the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, but also undermines the diversity and inclusivity that our society should strive for. It sends the message that the government is endorsing one specific religion over all others, and it marginalizes and excludes those of different faiths.
“Furthermore, this proposed amendment is a direct attack on the religious freedom and diversity that is a fundamental part of the fabric of our nation. Our government does not have the right to dictate or impose any specific religious beliefs or practices on its citizens.
“It is unacceptable for government officials to use their positions to impose their own religious beliefs on others and it is important that we all stand together in defense of the rights of all people, regardless of their faith or beliefs, and to celebrate and respect diversity in our society.
“We call on the Ohio House of Representatives to reject this proposed amendment and to uphold the principles of religious freedom.”
“Diversity is not only a value that we must uphold, but it is something we should celebrate,” said Outreach Director Victoria Hickcox, “It is the diversity of our beliefs, backgrounds, and experiences that makes our society stronger, and we should be working towards creating an environment where everyone feels included and respected.”
She added: “We believe that a diverse and inclusive society is a stronger society, and we will continue to fight for the rights of all people to practice their religion freely and without interference from the government. We urge the Ohio House of Representatives to reject this proposed amendment and to instead focus on policies that promote diversity and bring our communities together, rather than divide us.”
