(COLUMBUS, OHIO 6/1/2022) – Last week, the Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) joined the Sisters Summit Conference in Columbus for a session on challenging toxic narratives and stereotypes of Muslim women in America.

The conference was part of “The Ultimate Guide for Muslimahs,” a two-day event that featured “The Digital Sisterhood” podcast. The event was catered for Muslim women by Muslim women, in partnership with Masjid Ibn Tammiyah, Abubakar Asiddiq Islamic Center, and CAIR-Ohio.

CAIR-Ohio Acting Executive Director Amina Barhumi presented to a crowd of more than 500 women at the event. She overviewed stereotypes about Muslim women, the harmful effect of these stereotypes, and how toxic and negative stereotypes lead to both interpersonal discrimination and institutional discrimination against Muslim women.

Barhumi went on to share ways that the audience can challenge these negative narratives, such as self-advocacy, corrective interventions, bystander interventions, and using resources that CAIR-Ohio provides.

CAIR-Ohio safeguards Muslims’ right to exist, practice one’s faith, and participate in social and political institutions free from discrimination through free legal help, advocacy, and education.
