(COLUMBUS, OH 12/20/22) – On Tuesday, December 13, the Ohio chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) joined a rally with over 170 organizations to demand democracy and fight against House Joint Resolution (HJR) 6, a resolution to require 60% vote for initiated constitutional amendment as opposed to a simple majority (50% plus one).
Hundreds of concerned Ohioans filled the Statehouse to demonstrate their disapproval of HJR 6, along with several other bill the Ohio Legislature plans to quietly pass in lame duck. The demonstration coincided with the Senate Local Government Elections Committee, in which they approved a different measure attacking voting rights, HB 458, that would disenfranchise thousands of Ohioans. The full Senate approved the bill that afternoon and the bill is currently on the Governor’s desk.
“These voter suppression measures are indicative of the issues with a supermajority that is trying to hoard more power by stripping them away from Ohioans. We will continue to fight against any legislation that would make it harder to vote or create other barriers to a robust democracy,” said CAIR-Ohio Executive Director Amina Barhumi
