(COLUMBUS, OHIO 3/5/2020) On Saturday, February 29, and Sunday, March 1, the Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) presented on voting and civil rights at the Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) Midwest Conference.

The presentation about voting, which took place on Saturday, was led by CAIR-Ohio Government Affairs and Development Director Usjid Hameed. He spoke about the role Muslims have to play in the 2020 presidential election and why voting is so critical in uplifting and empowering marginalized communities. The “Know Your Rights” session, which took place on Sunday, was conducted by CAIR-Ohio Executive and Legal Director Romin Iqbal. Iqbal covered a wide array of topics, including one’s rights at the airport, and outlined the signs that would indicate someone is on a secret government watchlist.

CAIR-Ohio has published “Know Your Rights” materials online in English, Arabic, Somali, Urdu, Farsi, Bengali, and Bosnian. The multi-language civil rights materials can be found here and may be printed out for personal use or for distribution at local events.

Muslims who feel that their rights have been violated are urged to contact CAIR-Ohio for assistance by filing an incident report here.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
