(COLUMBUS, OHIO 6/30/2022) – During the final week of the Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) Summer Internship Development Program, interns focused on media and public relations as an important aspect of civil rights and advocacy work.
CAIR-Ohio hosted local journalists in its Columbus and Cincinnati offices, including Ann Fisher and Tana Weingartner. Fisher is the host and executive producer at WOSU News and Weingartner is the senior editor and reporter at WVXU. They spoke to interns about their backgrounds and work as reporters and journalism’s important role in our society. They also answered CAIR-Ohio interns’ questions about some of the challenges of their roles.
The interns also received media training from CAIR National Director of Research and Advocacy Corey Saylor. Following the training, interns prepared mock press conferences addressing real-world issues and getting experience in both public relations and journalist roles.
Throughout the internship program, interns worked on projects as groups that furthered their understanding and skills around civil rights, Islamophobia, legislative advocacy, and more. On Friday, July 1, the last day of the program, interns will present their reflections and lessons learned to the full cohort and CAIR-Ohio staff.
