OP-ED: State legislative maps fail us, but the fight for fair congressional districts is on

It’s no secret that Ohio is one of the most gerrymandered states in the nation. In 2018, Ohio voters said enough is enough and overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment on redistricting reform. The changes were to be delivered through the 2021 redistricting cycle by way of a fair and transparent redistricting process facilitated by the Ohio Redistricting Commission. CAIR-Ohio, Partners Sue Ohio Redistricting Commission Over Unconstitutional Maps

(COLUMBUS, OH 09/27/2021) – The Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio), along with coalition partners, today filed a lawsuit in the Ohio Supreme Court against the Ohio Redistricting Commission and various state officials over the unconstitutional partisan gerrymander of the General Assembly passed on party lines by the Ohio Redistricting Commission. CAIR-Ohio Hosts Community Picnic with the Islamic Center of Mason

(MASON, OHIO 09/23/2021) – On Saturday, September 18, 2021, the Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) hosted a community picnic at the Islamic Center of Mason. Over 200 community members joined the CAIR-Ohio team for food and fun family activities.

Mason community members learned about CAIR-Ohio’s work from CAIR-Ohio Executive Director Romin Iqbal, as well as members of CAIR-Ohio’s outreach and legal teams. CAIR-Ohio publications such as guidebooks on religious accommodations in healthcare, educational, and workplace settings, Know Your Rights guides and more were available for community members to take home.

CAIR-Ohio Participates in ICGT’s 20th Annual International Festival

(COLUMBUS, OHIO 09/24/2021) – On Saturday, September 18, 2021, the Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) participated in the 20th Annual International Festival hosted by the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo (ICGT).  As a participant organization, CAIR-Ohio held a voter registration drive, offered free legal consultations, and provided resources on religious accommodations and legal services with Toledo community members.

The International Festival has become one of the fastest-growing yearly events in the greater Toledo area and attracts thousands of community members every year. The event seeks to create a multicultural experience with representation from over 22 ethnicities, over 100 different styles of food served, a multi-cultural shopping bazaar and plenty of family activities. Festival attendees are able to tour the mosque, which was declared a Historical Landmark by the State of Ohio, to get a first-hand experience of Islam in America. All proceeds from the event are utilized for various educational and health-related activities in the greater Toledo area. Members from CAIR-Ohio’s legal team, Tala Dahbour and Maryam Abidi, were available to register voters, provide free legal consultation, and offer resources on religious accommodations in employment, healthcare, and educational settings.

CAIR-Ohio has four full-time attorneys on staff who provide free legal representation for victims of various forms of discrimination. We pursue the appropriate remedying measures ranging from cultural sensitivity training for the perpetrating party to mediation, from filing complaints with government agencies to full litigation. CAIR-Ohio undertakes cases related to school and employment discrimination, FBI questioning representation, public accommodation, racial profiling, immigration applications and seeking protection for refugees, immigration delay litigation, and religious accommodation for prisoners.
