(COLUMBUS, OHIO 9/12/2020) On Saturday, September 5, 2020, the Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) held a youth talk titled “Courageous Conversations” at the Islamic Center of Centerville located in Washington Township, a suburb of Dayton.

CAIR-Ohio Outreach Director Amina Barhumi facilitated a discussion with youth members on how to build the courage to speak up, and how to cultivate brave spaces that encourage Muslims to find their voices. The talk included the importance of civic engagement as an American Muslim, and how that plays into their larger role as a citizen that is responsible for positively impacting their community. Barhumi took the time to answer questions and have an authentic discussion about the challenges in society that impede our ability to have courageous conversations.

“As an organization that protects the civil liberties of American Muslims we see ourselves responsible for providing a learning space that deconstructs the dichotomy of being both American and Muslim. Youth must recognize that they are tomorrow’s leaders and with that in mind, have more involvement in how their future looks and be given the tools to make that happen,” said Barhumi.
