CAIR-Ohio Organizes Delegation to USCMO’s 7th Annual National Muslim Advocacy Day

(COLUMBUS, OHIO 6/16/2022) – This week, the Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) joined the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO) 7th Annual National Muslim Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. with the largest delegation of 30 participants.

This year the initiative was held in-person at the U.S. Capitol. CAIR-Ohio staff, interns, and other Ohio Muslims met with 15 congressional offices from across the state to discuss legislation related to the Muslim community including immigration, student debt relief, and combatting Islamophobia.

Participants sought to increase the transparency of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3), original co-sponsors for the Afghan Adjustment Act, support for canceling all student debt and establish interest-free federal student loans, as well as advancing the International Combating Islamophobia Act.

CAIR-Ohio hosts advocacy events annually at both the U.S. Capitol as well as the Ohio State Capitol to amplify the voices of Muslim constituents to legislators.

More details will be shared soon on our upcoming Statehouse Advocacy Day. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated.

Action Alert: Call on Ohio Senate to Rescind Endorsement of Islamophobic Film

On April 6, 2022, the Ohio Senate issued a citation in praise of the film “The Kashmir Files.” While the citation commends the film’s “universal appeal that speaks to a matter of great historical importance,” the reality is that the film presents a dangerous and bigoted depiction of Muslims in the context of the conflict in Kashmir, which ignores the nuanced realities on the ground.

This disinformation has had legitimate implications on the daily experiences of Islamophobia and discrimination for our Ohio Muslim community. It is the Ohio Senate’s job to represent all Ohioans and consider all Ohioans’ safety and well-being. This citation does the opposite and endorses Islamophobic narratives.

View the official citation here.

Join CAIR-Ohio in calling on Ohio state senators to rescind the citation and invite them to engage in more diverse education that does not weaponize false stereotypes of Muslims.
